Cane Sugar

Our business is primarily built around sugar cane, which accounts for 80% of the 160 million tonnes of sugar produced globally.


Cane has great versatility – multiple harvests can be reaped from a single planting and harvesting can take place at any time of the year, making production cost efficient. Cane sugar has great advantages compared with its nearest equivalent, Beet, in terms of flavour, growing methods, product variation and ease of use in cooking.


Characterized by its fruity aroma, sweet aftertaste and handling qualities, Tate & Lyle branded cane sugar is preferred by 68% of Pastry Chefs compared with Beet competitors. It is considered easier to mix and has better setting properties. When tested alongside Beet, in products such as hard candies, there was a discernible difference - cane produced a clearer, more caramel tasting, smoother textured candy.

The molasses derived from cane refining, unlike Beet, adds sweetness and enhances the flavour of brown and golden sugars.
